Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow hears your calls for change, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to act on them.

Roman Anthony is the top prospect in all of baseball, but despite everything he has shown to this point in the minor leagues, he still has things he needs to improve upon before making the jump to MLB. Boston is scuffling enough with its current lineup, so adding more variables might not be the best idea.

“You try to make these decisions as unemotionally as possible, which is really, really difficult because the rest of the organization and I are incredibly invested in the success of this team,” Breslow said in an exclusive interview with ESPN’s Jeff Passan. “You try to build out the best process you can when emotions aren’t high so you can approach it as rationally as possible.”

How can he become undeniable?

Anthony, for one, has a pretty rough chase rate (17.6%) and ground ball percentage (52%), while the Red Sox currently have some of their best bats residing in the corners of the outfield (Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu).

It’s not that they don’t believe in the player; they just know that racing to make a move could expose them to long-term issues.

“We have to be willing to react and pivot to all the variables in front of us,” Breslow said. “Things change. Guys get hurt. The lineup doesn’t look exactly the same as we thought it would on Opening Day. We try to balance all these things… We think he’s going to be a heck of a big league player.”

Boston currently sits at 27-31 as it enters a weekend series against the Atlanta Braves, but the schedule beyond that (save for two series against the high-powered New York Yankees) might be enough for the club to hold off on reinforcements for another month.

Anthony isn’t far off from getting the call, but don’t expect the decision to be made hastily.
