Here comes Giancarlo Stanton.

The injured Yankees designated hitter remains on track to make his regular-season debut this weekend when New York visits the Boston Red Sox for a three-game series at Fenway Park.

Stanton, who started the season on the injured list with tendinitis in both elbows, completed his second rehab game Wednesday with the Double-A Somerset Patriots. The 35-year-old Stanton went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one strikeout against the Portland Sea Dogs. In his first rehab game Tuesday, Stanton went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one walk.

So what’s next? Stanton is not expected to play Thursday for the Patriots, according to NJ Advance Media’s Randy Miller. Following the day of rest, the slugger will either continue his rehab stint with Somerset or meet the club in Boston, Miller wrote.

“We’ll see what the next step is for (Thursday) and then all through the weekend,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, per Miller. “I watched Giancarlo’s (at-bats) from (Tuesday) night. He looked really good. I texted with him a little bit about it. He felt good about it, so we’re moving in a good direction.”

When Stanton does return, it means less at-bats for Ben Rice, according to the New York Post’s Greg Joyce. With Stanton being the main designated hitter, Rice will be expected to see some playing time at first base and catcher.

If Stanton can return and stay healthy — that’s a big “if” for someone who’s missed significant time in each of the last six seasons — he will team with reigning American League Aaron Judge MVP to form perhaps the best 1-2 combo in baseball.

Judge is hitting an MLB-best .394 with 25 home runs and 59 RBI.
