During his introductory press conference on Tuesday, new Bruins head coach Marco Sturm reminded everyone how he first arrived in Boston as a player.

Joe Thornton was a fan favorite in Boston in the early 2000’s but a trade in 2005 sent him away to the San Jose Sharks. In the trade the Bruins received three players: Brad Stuart, Wayne Primeau and Sturm.

When Sturm first stepped foot into the city of Boston, he wasn’t treated nicely at first due to the circumstances of the trade.

“When I got traded, Joe Thornton trade, it wasn’t my fault,” Sturm joked during NESN’s coverage on Tuesday. “I got here and it was difficult, I’m not going to lie, it was difficult because everyone loved Joe and it was a big trade.”

While Sturm admits that the first year or two in Boston was tough, he also says that the fans pushed him in a positive way. As the Bruins continued to improve each year, he enjoyed the fans’ positivity around the city.

“The years after that, especially when Claude [Julien] took over, you could see the process,” Sturm said. “You could see every year how we got better and all of a sudden I see a big chance here in the city of Boston because they are behind you.”
