Rafael Devers hasn’t exactly been a San Francisco treat following his trade to the Giants. The former Boston Red Sox star is dealing with a “slight groin strain,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser.
In Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to the Miami Marlins, Devers tried to score from first base in the fifth inning on a two-out double by Heliot Ramos. Giants third base coach Matt Williams waved Devers home and the slugger was out by six or seven steps, according to Slusser.
Devers, who had just sprinted to first base to prevent a double play, looked “uncomfortable” on his mad dash home, Slusser noted.
“We’ve got to try to score when we can,” Williams said, per Slusser. “I made the decision, if it’s the wrong decision, it’s the wrong decision, but I made it.”
Giants manager Bob Melvin had no issue with Williams sending Devers home.

“You’ve got to make two perfect throws,” he said, according to Slusser. “We’re not swinging the bats. Sometimes you’ve got to take some risks as far as sending guys. When the ball was down in the corner, I was going, ‘Send him!’ We’re trying to tie a game right there.”
Melvin kept Devers in the game after his sprint around the bases and later said Devers was OK, Slusser reports.
Batting second in the lineup as the designated hitter, Devers went 1-for-4 with one strikeout Tuesday in as the Giants fell to 3-4 since their blockbuster five-player trade with the Red Sox.

Devers is hitting just .222 since switching coasts and his only home run came against his former team.
Devers and the Giants continue their three-game series with the Marlins at Oracle Park on Wednesday.
