The Boston Red Sox have been a little shorthanded recently with several key players currently working their way back off the team’s injured list.
Recent updates on the health of Alex Bregman, Masataka Yoshida, and Jordan Hicks over the weekend seem to indicate that the Red Sox should be back at full strength sometime after the All-Star break. On Monday, the team announced that one major piece of the Red Sox offense will be back in the lineup to begin a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.
Before Monday’s game, rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer was reinstated from the bereavement list after missing the last three games to attend to personal matters. To clear roster space for Mayer, infielder Nick Sogard was optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
The Red Sox posted a record of 1-2 while Mayer was away and have largely struggled at the plate since trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on June 15.
Since making his Major League debut on May 24, Mayer has batted .204 with four home runs and seven RBI in 27 games. He was starting games at second base before being placed on the bereavement list Friday.

Sogard will return to Worcester after batting .254 with 15 hits and three RBI in 17 games with Boston this season. The 27-year-old made his MLB debut with the team during the 2024 season and has a lifetime batting average of .265 in 48 games.
The Red Sox will begin a three-game series against the Reds on Monday with Garrett Crochet (7-4) opposing Chase Burns (0-0) in Game One.
