Triston Casas has to take a long, grueling road to get back to playing for the Boston Red Sox.
Casas ruptured his patellar tendon in his left knee on May 3, resulting in a lost season for the 25-year-old first baseman.
Casas’ focus is now all on his recovery. There’s no definitive timetable for his return, but Casas, who spoke to reporters for the first time Tuesday since suffering the devastating injury, has a date targeted to be back in a Red Sox uniform.
“I’ve heard different amount of months. I haven’t heard anything over a year, though,” Casas told reporters, per NESN. “So as of right now, our goal is Opening Day next year. Just going to take it slow. Going to spend the winter in Fort Myers rehabbing and until then, try to stay in a positive mindset. I know there’s a lot of healing that’s done outside of the training table. So, just trying to take it one day at a time, be positive and maintain a good headspace is going to be important as well.”
The comments from Casas lined up with what Red Sox manager Alex Cora said a month ago about Casas’ return. Cora said the expectation is for Casas to be ready for spring training in 2026, but that’s “not 100%.”

Casas will be 10 months removed from the significant injury by the time spring training rolls around. The Red Sox likely will be cautious with Casas as he works his way back, which might make being ready for Opening Day an even more difficult task.
But Casas, who will have missed 232 games over the last two seasons, is just trying to grapple with what is in front of him at the moment as thoughts of next season give him hope.
“I’m not going to say they’ve been great because I’d rather be out there helping the team win games,” Casas said. “But considering everything that’s happened, I’m in a good headspace and just focused on making a healthy comeback, progressing every day in whatever fashion it is and trying to fill my time and get better any way that I can.”
