Roman Anthony knows miscues like the one he had in right field Monday night can’t be a common occurrence.
Anthony, the top prospect in baseball, made his MLB debut in the Boston Red Sox’ 10-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The 11-inning thriller featured no shortage of chaos, among them a blunder from Anthony in the fifth.
He played a Yandy Diaz grounder too far off to his side and it skipped past him, rolling to the warning track before Ceddanne Rafaela was able to retrieve it. Brandon Lowe scored from first to put the Rays up 3-0, while Diaz reached third — though he would get stranded.
“It just can’t happen,” Anthony said after the game, via ESPN. “It’s tough when you lose a game like that, you feel like that’s the reason we lost — little things like that. Just got to learn from it and be better.”
Anthony went hitless in his debut, but did plate a run in the ninth with a groundout to short that pulled Boston within one. He struck out and walked once, as well.
