The Boston Celtics haven’t done much in free agency this offseason, and they watched another target come off the board when Marcus Smart reportedly agreed to a two-year, $11 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday.

After trading Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, the Celtics had some minutes open up in their backcourt. They already saw one of their targets, Damian Lillard, sign elsewhere earlier this week, as he opted to return to the Trail Blazers after getting waived by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Considering how he spent the first nine seasons of his career in Boston, Smart was linked to his former team in the event he got bought out by the Washington Wizards. Sure enough, that appears set to happen, but the Lakers ended up landing him.

You wouldn’t have known the Celtics missed out on another free agent target based on their latest social media post, though. Shortly after the report surfaced indicating Smart would sign with the Lakers, Boston shared a two-word post on X alongside a pair of photos featuring Baylor Scheierman and Max Shulga.

“All smiles,” the Celtics said in their post.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that fans weren’t exactly pleased with this post, and the replies quickly came flying in.

@TruckBon said on X, “not smiling rn knowing that Smart just went to the Lakers.”

@howsyahowya explained why they aren’t smiling, saying, “But I wanted Marcus back.” @CookedbyRiley also wasn’t pleased, responding to the post by saying, “I’m not smiling right now admin.”

After missing out on another free agent, the Celtics are back to the drawing board. And while the team was unsuccessful in bringing Smart back to town, it seems like fans are more upset to see him landing with the Lakers.
