One of Major League Baseball’s most powerful trade chips has spoken out about possibly landing with the New York Yankees.
At this point, the secret’s out about the Arizona Diamondbacks’ trade deadline plans. They are selling, as reiterated by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale on Sunday.
“The Arizona Diamondbacks, muddling along around .500, will definitely be sellers at the trade deadline according to rival executives, believing they have no choice if they want to compete in 2026,” Nightengale wrote.
“I don’t see a world they don’t sell,” one GM said (per Nightengale). “They have so many holes, and so many free agents.”
“They are making starters Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez and first baseman Josh Naylor available,” Nightengale continued. “They are all free agents after the season. The D-backs are searching for young pitching in return.”

Suárez is by far the most explosive prize of the players mentioned by Nightengale. The two-time All-Star third baseman also happens to match a position of need for the Yankees, who recently DFA’d DJ LeMahieu and moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to his natural spot at second base.
Suárez, 33, would be an outstanding acquisition for New York, especially at the plate. He has an .889 OPS this season with 31 home runs and 78 RBI in 348 at-bats for Arizona.
Conveniently for the Yankees, Suárez is also more than interested in joining them, as evidenced by a new interview with Suàrez that surfaced during the All-Star break.

“It’s a team that wants to win,” Suárez said of the Yankees, per SNY. “They’re hungry still. If I got over there, I would do my best and try to help them win the World Series.”
It remains to be seen what New York’s general manager, Brian Cashman, would have to give up in the form of prospect capital to land Suárez. If Cashman can arrive at a package that’s not too rich in his eyes, it sounds like a Suárez-Yankees union has the makings of a match made in heaven.
