The Boston Red Sox had their hands in multiple trade attempts leading up to the deadline.
Boston’s last-minute push to snag Joe Ryan from the Minnesota Twins was revealed on Thursday, even if this attempt was later described as “feeble” by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Rosenthal, on the whole, was ultra-critical of Boston’s deadline performance while appearing on the Foul Territory Network on Thursday night.
Not only was Rosenthal underwhelmed by Boston’s efforts to land another starting pitcher besides Dustin May; he was surprised that the Red Sox didn’t do anything to improve their depth chart at first base, which has been an area of interest for Boston ever since Triston Casas was lost for the season on May 2.
“They did not even address first base,” Rosenthal vented. “I know they’ve gotten decent work out of Romy González and Abraham Toro, but my goodness, that was a position where they had to act. They tried for (Arizona Diamondbacks’) Eugenio Suárez, and they tried with the idea of playing him at first base (but) didn’t get him.”

“And again, they may say … ‘We’re gonna be better next year. Our young guys will be that much better.’ Yeah, that’s what the (Baltimore) Orioles were saying a year ago. There is no guarantee in this sport, or any other.”
Suárez, of course, ended up landing with the Seattle Mariners, who entered their game on Friday 1.5 games back of Boston for second place in the American League Wild Card race.
