With Major League Baseball’s trade deadline eight days away, the Boston Red Sox continue to be connected to a number of intriguing names that could help the team return to the postseason for the first time since the 2021 season.

The Red Sox have most recently been named as possible suitors for Arizona Diamondbacks’ right-handed starters Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen if Arizona decides to sell at the trade deadline. The same goes for Los Angeles Angels’ José Soriano, a 26-year-old right-hander who won’t be a free agent until the 2029 offseason.

Miami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera is the latest name floated by baseball insiders as a strong fit for the Red Sox’s starting pitching needs. Like Soriano, the 27-year-old hurler won’t be a free agent until the 2029 offseason, so acquiring him could require a competitive offer of prospects as a non-rental acquisition at the deadline.

Speaking with MLB Network‘s Lauren Shehadi on Wednesday, baseball insider Jon Morosi detailed what the Marlins could want in return for Cabrera if the team decides to trade him.

“This is the kind of (trade) picture that we’re talking about now,” said Morosi. “There are multiple years of control, so (GM) Peter Bendix is not in any sort of rush to move him. But if you’ve got the right controllable young outfielder, perhaps in the minor leagues, whether it’s Owen Casey with the Cubs, maybe Spencer Jones with the Yankees, this is the kind of arm that you might be able to get if you build a package big enough to get one of the most electrifying young arms in baseball.”

Morosi’s comments about including a young and controllable outfielder stand out. The Red Sox are one of a few teams that have a surplus of young and controllable outfield talent at multiple levels of the organization’s system. Already rumored to be willing to use that surplus to get a deadline deal done, the Red Sox appear to be one of the teams that could give Miami what they’re looking for in exchange for Cabrera.

In 17 starts this season, Cabrera has a record of 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 88 innings pitched. The Marlins continue to be in rebuild mode, and 10 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East standings with a record of 48-53.
