The New York Yankees appear to have a backup plan in their pursuit of Eugenio Suárez.
There is mutual interest between New York and the Arizona Diamondbacks slugger, whose impressive home run count was 36 entering Thursday. Suárez is seen as the most impactful power bat on the trade market (assuming Arizona sells), and he’s exactly the kind of player the Yankees would love to slide into their lineup to solve their third base issue.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman knows that Suárez has many suitors, however, and it sounds like Cashman has a contingency plan if Suárez lands elsewhere or is not moved at all. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported late on Wednesday night that a member of the Colorado Rockies figures into this plan for Cashman.
“The Yankees have interest in Ryan McMahon as a backup plan to Eugenio Suarez, sources said, as they try to upgrade at third base,” Feinsand posted to X. “McMahon is controlled through 2027, earning $16 million in each of the next two seasons.”
As Feinsand alluded to, McMahon, 30, has two further seasons remaining on his six-year, $70 million contract (per Spotrac). A former No. 42 overall pick (2013 MLB draft), McMahon has spent his entire career thus far with the Rockies. He has a career OPS of .743.

This season, McMahon’s batting numbers are below his career averages. He was hitting .217 (career .240) with a .717 OPS entering Thursday to go along with 16 home runs and 35 RBIs. McMahon was a first-time All-Star last season, showing that a rise in his 2025 production could be around the corner.
Keep an eye on McMahon in connection with the Yankees if Suárez falls through for New York.
