One MLB insider thinks the Boston Red Sox should make some noise before next Thursday’s trade deadline.
Recent rumors have tempered expectations regarding Boston’s deadline plans. While the Red Sox may pursue another starting pitcher and first baseman, they won’t necessarily move top young talent for a star upgrade.
Jon Heyman encouraged the Red Sox to take a more aggressive approach when discussing their possible plans on Bleacher Report.
“I’ve seen that suggested that they’re not doing something big. They’re gonna stay with what they got,” Heyman said Thursday. “I understand they lost the first few games out of the break. I mean, I don’t think that’s a good plan at all.”
Heyman implored Boston to spend some of the money saved by sending Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants last month. While Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell are “not going anywhere,” the Red Sox could find other ways to acquire help.

“I do think they need to do something,” Heyman added. “Whether it’d be to pick up somebody and pay the money, however you’re gonna do it without giving up the big prospects, I think you owe it to the fans at this point.”
Boston at least appears to be exploring big moves. Moments before urging the Red Sox to take action, Heyman named them among six teams interested in San Diego Padres starting pitcher Dylan Cease.
The 29-year-old is drawing a lot of attention within the American League East during a down year, as Heyman also mentioned the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays. Landing Cease would certainly constitute doing something despite his 4.59 ERA, as no MLB pitcher has more strikeouts (1,035) since the start of 2021.
