The Miami Marlins are open for business ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline and that’s possibly very good news for the Boston Red Sox.

“Improving Marlins now looking to build around promising young players (Kyle) Stowers (1.332 OPS in July), (Agustin) Ramirez and (Eury) Perez,” the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported Tuesday.

“Expected to listen on (Edward) Cabrera, (Sandy) Alcantara, (Jesus) Sanchez, (Anthony) Bender,” Heyman noted.

“Edward Cabrera has become more coveted than Sandy Alcantara, who teams believe might take an offseason to fix,” ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported Tuesday.

“Alcantara’s strikeout-to-walk ratio is scary low — just 1.9 — and his ERA is 7.14. Cabrera, on the other hand, is striking out more than a batter per inning and his ERA sits at 3.61. The 27-year-old right-hander will come at a heavy cost for opposing teams,” Rogers added.

Cabrera is 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA this season in 17 starts. He’s making $1.95 million this season and has three more years of arbitration eligibility remaining, meaning the Marlins will want a boatload in return for the right-hander.

On the other hand, Alcantara is 4-9 in 19 starts this season and has given up an MLB-worst 77 earned runs, accounting for his unsightly ERA.

CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson noted earlier this month the 29-year-old right-hander, who won the National League Cy Young Award in 2022, hasn’t been the same since having Tommy John surgery in 2023.

According to Spotrac, Alcantara is making $17.3 million this season and will be on the books for the same amount next year. In 2027, he’s slated to make $21 million but the deal includes a club option with a $2 million buyout.

The Red Sox are in the market for a starting pitcher after losing Hunter Dobbins to a season-ending torn ACL and putting Tanner Houck back on the injured list.
