The Yankees acquired a big-time closer from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, but New York might not be done making moves.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the Yankees traded for two-time All-Star closer David Bednar.
“The New York Yankees are finalizing a trade to acquire closer David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN,” Passan reported. “Deal is pending medical review.”
“Among the return to the Pirates in the Bednar deal, per ESPN sources: Catcher Rafael Flores, who tore up AA, is now at AAA, is a top-shelf framer and regarded as a big league-ready catcher,” Passan added. “A very good centerpiece. Also in it: Edgleen Perez, who is 19 with excellent swing decisions.”
The Yankees have been aggressive in recent days. General manager Brian Cashman now adds Bednar to a list of deadline acquisitions that also includes former Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon.

Cashman might not be done, either. Shortly after the Bednar deal was announced on Thursday, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal appeared on the “Foul Territory” program and discussed how he believes the Yankees are not finished making moves.
“I do not expect that they’re done,” Rosenthal said.
“The Yankees still want another bullpen arm, at least one more. They are also looking at starting pitching … I’ve heard they were in on (Sandy) Alcántara and others, so I do not expect that they’re done, and we won’t have a full picture of them until we pass 6 p.m.”

Alcántara, a former National League Cy Young Award winner, has also been linked to the Chicago Cubs, among other teams.
