The Boston Red Sox are red-hot, and ESPN’s Jeff Passan does not see that momentum cooling off anytime soon — or leading to anything resembling a fire sale.
Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Passan shut down trade speculation surrounding Boston’s two most talked-about stars: reliever Aroldis Chapman and third baseman Alex Bregman.
“Aroldis Chapman’s going nowhere, Alex Bregman’s going nowhere,” Passan said. “They’re going to add, and if they get another starting pitcher… the Boston Red Sox are legitimate World Series contenders.”
It was a sentiment echoed by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal earlier Monday.
The club’s surge into contention aligns with the growing sense that Boston is shifting firmly into buyer mode ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.

Chapman and Bregman had both surfaced in trade rumors in recent weeks, especially Chapman — a top bullpen arm with extensive playoff experience.
The 37-year-old lefty has been lights out in 2025, earning his eighth All-Star nod after locking down his 352nd career save Sunday with a dominant ninth inning against Tampa Bay. He heads into the break with a 1.18 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 38 innings.
Bregman, meanwhile, returned to action just days before this week’s all-star game hiatus following a quad strain that kept him sidelined since May 24. The veteran slugger was batting .299 with 11 homers and 35 RBI at the time of the injury — production that earned him a third career All-Star selection.

If anything, Passan suggested, the Red Sox are gearing up to strengthen — not subtract — at the deadline.
“All eyes are going to be on the Red Sox,” he said.
