The Boston Red Sox prioritized pitching in the 2025 MLB Draft, grabbing hurlers with 15 of their 21 draft picks. With so many fresh arms added to their farm system, the question now becomes: what do they do with them?
While some teams send their top pitching prospects straight to the Minor Leagues so they can start gaining experience, the Red Sox don’t operate that way. They prefer to ease their pitchers into their program and not push them too hard, too soon.
According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, Boston once again plans to send its top pitching draft picks to the team complex in Fort Myers for the rest of the season, including Kyson Witherspoon, Marcus Phillips and Anthony Eyanson.
Per Cotillo, the Red Sox do this to protect their young pitchers’ arms. College pitchers carry heavy workloads in the spring, so Boston prevents them from pitching in games throughout the spring and fall to make sure they get plenty of rest and recovery time before diving in.

Accordingly, the club’s top pitching draft picks will spend the rest of the season working out at Fort Myers. Some late-round pitchers may report to an affiliate later this year, but the Red Sox aren’t taking any chances with their most valuable arms.
The goal is to get them in the building, make them comfortable, get them on the training program and have them ready to hit the ground running next spring.
That patient approach may be disappointing for Boston fans who want to see their new pitchers in action as soon as possible, but the team believes that’s what’s best for its young hurlers in the long run.
