Marcelo Mayer produced quite a few gasps when he exited the Boston Red Sox’s matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.
It’s not for the reason some thought, however.
Mayer was removed from the game due to “right wrist discomfort,” according to a statement released by the team. Red Sox manager Alex Cora is expected to provide further updates on his condition following the game.
Mayer, 22, kept a fifth-inning rally alive prior to leaving the game, drawing a two-out walk that loaded the bases before coming around to score when Romy Gonzalez belted a grand slam — as the club needed just one inning to turn a 5-0 deficit into a 6-5 lead. Mayer was replaced by Abraham Toro, who slid into the nine spot in the lineup and took over at third base.
The Red Sox and Phillies will conclude their series on ESPN, before the former returns home to host the Los Angeles Dodgers at Fenway Park.
