The trade deadline can be a time of turmoil for MLB players. Besides those with no-trade clauses, their entire lives can be uprooted in the blink of an eye.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito is no stranger to deadline rumors. In 2023, he was traded from the Chicago White Sox to the Los Angeles Angels. Not long after, he was waived by the Angels and picked up by the Cleveland Guardians.
Giolito threw six innings and surrendered just one run on Tuesday. He allowed five hits, struck out two and walked six. He picked up his seventh win of the season as the Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins, 8-5.
While Giolito has done his part lately, the rotation as a whole could use reinforcements. Alex Cora was noncommittal on Richard Fitts’ role moving forward after a rough outing on Monday. The trade deadline is just days away, and dominoes are starting to fall.
Despite rumors swirling, Gioltio isn’t concerned about the noise.

“I have no idea [what to expect],” Giolito said. “I’m very much focused internally on the team, the clubhouse, winning baseball games. That’s where I like to keep my focus. I don’t like to stray away and dive into all that kind of stuff.”
The Red Sox have been connected to several starting pitchers over the last few weeks. An injury to Marcelo Mayer makes it more difficult to trade from the major league roster, but acquiring a depth piece is well within their means.
The trade deadline is Thursday, June 31, at 6 p.m.
