The Boston Red Sox were clearly interested in David Robertson before he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow not only went to scout the veteran reliever at his throwing session earlier this weekend, but reportedly made an offer and eventually lost out, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Nightengale reported there were nine total teams to attend the throwing session on Saturday, highlighting both Boston and Philly.

Robertson, 40, was superb with the Texas Rangers in 2024, posting a 3.00 ERA and striking out 99 batters in 68 games (72 innings) before entering free agency and remaining there well into this season — largely of his own volition. The Red Sox have been tied to the right-hander numerous times over the last several seasons, but are not one of the eight clubs he’s appeared for.

Boston won’t miss out on seeing him pitch once again, however, as it’ll open up a his new club on Monday.
