The Boston Red Sox are finally on the board!
Boston has been among the most intriguing teams to watch before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline hits on Thursday, but remained relatively quiet over the last few weeks. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow evidently found someone he felt was worth pulling the trigger on, though.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that left-handed reliever Steven Matz was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. Blaze Jordan will be sent away and reunited with Cardinals future president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, who drafted him in 2020.
Matz, 34, has been nothing if not solid in a utility role over the last three seasons, starting 26 of his 69 total appearances since 2023. The Cardinals have recently shifted him to the bullpen on a full-time basis, though, where he has a 3.44 ERA across 55 innings in 2025. Matz will remain in the bullpen, according to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, and will receive a prorated salary before becoming a free agent at the end of the season.
The New York Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed the deal.
