The Boston Red Sox recently traded catcher Blake Sabol to the Chicago White Sox. The move left Boston short on catching depth behind Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong. At the time, Seby Zavala was the next man up for the Red Sox, with very little behind him.
On Thursday, the Red Sox made a move to bolster their catching depth. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, the team signed Ronaldo Hernadez to a minor league contract.
Hernandez has a history with the organization. Before the 2021 season, the Red Sox traded Jeffrey Springs and Chris Mazza to the Tampa Bay Rays. In return, Boston received Hernandez, as well as Nick Sogard.
Hernandez spent three years in the Red Sox organization, between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. After the 2023 season, he elected free agency and joined the Arizona Diamondbacks. Most recently, he was in the New York Yankees minor league organization.
The catcher is yet to crack the major leagues, but could have an opportunity with the Red Sox. Connor Wong has struggled offensively, and Carlos Narvaez is already at a career high in innings caught. Should either of them require time off, Hernandez may be next in line.

Hernandez is a solid defender with some power in his bat, but his propensity to chase pitches has limited his offensive production.
He’ll likely report to Worcester, where he’ll share time with Zavala behind the plate.
