The Boston Red Sox must remain patient before reaping the potential rewards from their seismic Rafael Devers trade. One of the deal’s key components continues to hone his craft in the minor leagues.
Along with pitchers Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison and Jose Bello, Boston acquired outfielder James Tibbs III from the San Francisco Giants for Devers. Last year’s No. 13 overall draft pick ranks sixth in his new organization’s farm system, per MLB.com.
On the same day Hicks recorded a save for the Red Sox, Tibbs delivered his own highlight. The 22-year-old, wearing a Scooby Doo-themed jersey, sent a shot over the center-field wall at Double-A Portland. It marked his first home run as a member of the Red Sox organization.
Here’s a look at the moment, courtesy of the Sea Dogs:
Tibbs didn’t touch them all until his 16th game with the Sea Dogs, but he’s nevertheless held his own. The left-handed hitter is batting .286 with a .378 on-base percentage in 74 plate appearances.

Tibbs showcased more power before the trade, depositing a dozen home runs in 57 games at High-A Eugene. MLB’s scouting report gives him a 55 power grade on a scale where 50 is considered average.
Fans shouldn’t expect Tibbs to join Hicks, and potentially Harrison, on the Red Sox this season. MLB estimates a 2026 debut, but FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen said he may not arrive until “late 2027 or 2028.”

While he makes hard contact and possesses a refined plate approach, Longenhagen wrote that Tibbs must improve his defense and proficiency against left-handed pitching to develop into an everyday MLB starter. He still has plenty of time to grow in the minors.
