It’s been a while since we’ve heard the name of New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso in the same sentence as that of the Boston Red Sox.
When chief baseball officer Craig Breslow traded All-Star designated hitter Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants last month, some speculated Alonso could be in play for Boston when the hot stove heats up this winter.
After all, the 30-year-old will be a free agent after the World Series. Red Sox fans can just imagine the two-time Home Run Derby champion taking aim at the Green Monster.
But Alonso, a five-time All-Star, sounds like he’s not even thinking that far ahead, even though he’s expected to opt out of his two-year, $54 million contract this fall.
“There’s a lot of things that happen business wise and a lot of unpredictable things that happen in free agency,” Alonso said Monday, per SNY.

Alonso admitted it would be “really special” if the home-grown Mets star could sign a long-term contract to stay in Queens.
“Yeah, this time around, like last year there’s no guarantee, but happy I stayed,” Alonso continued, per SNY. “This is a great team, it’s a great group of guys. We’ll see what happens business wise, nothing’s guaranteed, so we’ll see.”
Alonso’s 247 career home runs rank second all-time in Mets history, with leader Darryl Strawberry (252) within reach. But the first baseman isn’t worried about his legacy at this point.

“I mean I gotta finish this year off strong, I gotta finish this year healthy,” Alonso added, according to SNY. “Ultimately right now, I’m just thinking about what I can do to help my team every single day. The free agency stuff, I’m not really worried about that right now. I’m sure at the end of the year I’ll have plenty of time to think of that.”
Alonso is hitting a career-high .280 this season. He leads the National League with 26 doubles and he’s tied for second with 77 RBIs. Alonso is tied for eighth in the NL with 21 home runs and will represent the Senior Circuit Tuesday at the All-Star Game in Atlanta, Ga.
