On the eve of Labor Day Weekend, the Boston Red Sox are in playoff position this late in the season for the first time since 2021.

Between the arrivals of Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, the dominant pitching of Garrett Crochet and Aroldis Chapman, and the resurgence of Trevor Story, it’s been a fun summer for Red Sox fans, especially compared to the last few seasons.

The last several campaigns have been trying ones for Boston fans, who have endured three last-place finishes in four years, multiple late-season collapses and the departure of several franchise stars, including Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers.

This year, however, their patience and resilience are paying off. The Red Sox enter play on Thursday a season-high 14 games over .500 and in control of the American League’s top wild card spot.

Before Wednesday’s 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles, Alex Cora expressed his gratitude for the continued support of Boston fans during the organization’s recent rough patch.

“You know, the cool thing about it, I’ll be very honest about it, like we sucked for three years, but Fenway never sucked,” Cora said via MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “It was a packed house every single day, and we appreciate that from our fans.”

Cora’s correct that Fenway Park remained packed from 2022 to 2024 despite the disappointing product on the field. Attendance stayed between 2.6 million and 2.7 million every year, ranking in the top five of American League teams each season.

That trend has continued this year, and Cora and several players have credited Red Sox fans for giving the team a boost. Boston’s 41-25 at Fenway this season — one of the best home records in baseball.

After Thursday’s series finale against the Orioles, the Red Sox return to Boston for a six-game homestand versus the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Guardians — neither of whom are above .500. It will be a good chance for the Red Sox to keep playing good baseball at home and continue their playoff push in front of their loyal fans.
