Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Dustin May was coming off two strong outings when he took the mound for Sunday Night Baseball against the New York Yankees.

Unfortunately, May couldn’t build on his previous two outings, completing just 4 1/3 innings and surrendering five runs on five hits and three walks.

Command was an issue for May all night. At times, his pitches caught too much of the plate, resulting in three home runs. In other moments, his pitches were non-competitive, allowing Yankee hitters to set their sights on the heart of the plate.

After the game, the Red Sox starter used one word to describe his outing.

“Bad,” May said.

Two-strike execution was another issue for May. He threw 20 pitches with two strikes, but only managed to strike out three hitters. Non-competitive pitches with two strikes were an issue, helping hitters climb back into counts.

May knew he didn’t have his best stuff on Sunday, and credited the Yankees for taking advantage.

“They hit honey-hole pitches, and I threw a lot of them,” May said. “I think they did their job.”

May is scheduled to make his next start when the Red Sox return to Fenway Park for a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
