Boston Red Sox starter Walker Buehler received the news that he would be moved to the bullpen.
Buehler was scheduled to start on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles, but due to recent performances, the veteran righty was moved to the bullpen.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the move would likely be permanent to avoid flip-flopping roles.
“This is what we decided, he’ll help us over there and he’s going to help us win ballgames,” Cora said.
After games, Buehler has consistently been disappointed in his performances. He’s routinely commented on his own poor outings, even saying he didn’t know if he belonged in the league at one point.

Cora said Buehler responded professionally to the news, and Buehler looked for a silver lining.
“To be frank, if I wasn’t so fucking miserable trying to get people out every five days, I don’t think I’d react positively at all to this. It’s kind of a good sign of where I’m at mentally that I’m trying to find an opportunity or a bright spot in this for myself and our team,” Buehler said.
Buehler has one career relief appearance in the regular season, all the way back in 2018. He pitched one inning out of the bullpen after returning from injury and allowed five runs. He’s been an excellent playoff performer and notably closed out the 2024 World Series.
