The Boston Red Sox pounced on the opportunity to shore up their first base depth chart earlier this week by signing Nathaniel Lowe after he was designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals. And in only four games, he’s managed to make quite an impact.

In his first start on Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles, Lowe announced himself to Red Sox fans with a game-tying two-run home run to send the game to extra innings. While Boston did eventually lose in the 11th inning, Lowe’s addition proved to be a big one right off the bat.

In the team’s first two games of their incredibly important four-game series against the New York Yankees, Lowe has delivered the goods once again. He drove in two runs in their 6-3 win on Thursday, and after getting subbed into the game on Friday, he immediately ripped a double and came around the score the only run of the contest.

Prior to landing in Boston, Lowe had struggled this season with Washington, hitting .216 with 16 home runs and 68 RBIs in 119 games for them. And in just four games with the Red Sox, Lowe has already managed to exceed his wins above replacement metric from his entire year with the Nationals.

Sometimes, making the jump from a noncontender to a team in the thick of the playoff chase can spark a player to turn things around. It’s still very early in Lowe’s tenure with Boston, but that appears to be what is happening with him.

The Red Sox have picked up a pair of massive wins to kick off their series against the Yankees, but they won’t be content with just splitting this four-game set. They will be going for the series victory when they return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. ET.
