A bounce-back campaign has created a possibility that would have seemed inconceivable a few months ago. However, an MLB insider still considers the development unlikely.

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story can opt out of his contract this offseason. He has two years remaining on a six-year, $140 million deal signed before the 2022 season.

Despite Story’s bounce-back year, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale still labeled it “far-fetched” that the 32-year-old will enter free agency this offseason.

Story will make $25 million in each of the next two seasons of his current contract. The Red Sox also have a $25 million club option for 2028 with $5 million buyout.

Nightengale believes Story would be making a “financial blunder” by forgoing that $55 million and testing his market value this winter.

Even mentioning this scenario shows how far Story has come in 2025. He played just 163 games over his first three seasons in Boston, hitting a modest .232/.296/.397 with 21 home runs.

Story has fared much better this year, batting .258/.305/.432 and becoming the third Red Sox shortstop to join the 20/20 club with 22 home runs and 24 stolen bases. He has an .848 OPS and 2.7 WAR since a dreadful May and has stayed healthy to play 133 of 137 games entering Sunday.

A strong finish may cause Story to wonder if he can secure more long-term security or receive a modest raise with a new short-term contract. But his age, health history and low on-base percentage would make that a risky proposition for the potential American League Comeback Player of the Year.
