There’s some good news and not-so-good news in the latest starting pitcher power rankings from MLB.com. On the one hand, Boston Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet holds firm at No. 3 overall despite getting rocked earlier this week by the Houston Astros.

On the other hand, Crochet continues to trail Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, who is ranked No. 1 overall. That means Skubal is on track to win his second straight American League Cy Young Award.

“Crochet had a rare clunker on Monday against Houston, allowing five earned runs for the third time in 2025,” MLB.com’s Andrew Simon wrote Thursday.

“The lefty has given up no more than two earned runs in 20 of his other 21 starts. It’s still remarkable that a pitcher with such a limited career workload is leading the AL in innings (152 1/3), batters faced (611), wins (13) and strikeouts (188).

“A second straight 200-K campaign is within sight, as soon as his next start,” Simon added.

Crochet’s wins and innings pitched are career highs for the 26-year-old southpaw. The two-time All-Star has a 2.48 ERA this season, which is third in the American League. His 4.3 WAR is fifth-best.

However Skubal leads the league in ERA (2.35), K/9 (11.6), WAR (5.5) and WHIP (0.86). Unless the Tigers ace struggles down the stretch, Crochet’s Cy Young chances don’t look very good.

The Boston lefty is trying to become the first Red Sox pitcher to win the Cy Young Award since Rick Porcello in 2016.
