The Boston Red Sox have announced a pair of roster moves ahead of Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Nathaniel Lowe, who has been away from the team since Thursday, was activated from the paternity list and will begin the game on the bench with Romy González earning the start and playing first base.
To make room for Lowe’s return, the team optioned infielder Nick Sogard to Triple-A Worcester. He was 0-3 with a walk and a stolen base during his lone appearance with the team on Friday.
Since being released by the Washington Nationals on August 16, Lowe has provided an offensive spark for the Red Sox. Currently batting .296 with eight hits, one home run and seven RBI’s in 27 at-bats with his new club, Lowe was batting a career-worst .216 before Washington designated him for assignment on August 14.
The former Silver Slugger recently spoke about the excitement of exiting the rebuilding Nationals and entering a pennant race with his new ball club.

“It’s so exciting,” said Lowe, according to MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “Getting plugged into a lineup that’s having great success, and is part of making a great postseason push, is what it’s all about. It’s a true blessing to be here.”
The Red Sox will play Game Two of a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday with Dustin May (7-10) opposing Johan Oviedo (1-0). The Red Sox dropped Game One of the series with a 4-2 loss on Friday.
