Ranking the top 50 quarterbacks in NFL history…
11. Drew Brees
Drafted in the second round (32nd overall) by the San Diego Chargers in 2001 out of Purdue University, Brees overcame early injuries and skepticism about his height to become one of the most prolific passers in NFL history. He established himself as a starter by 2002, leading the Chargers to a playoff berth in 2004.
After five seasons with San Diego, Brees signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2006. Over 15 years with the Saints, he set numerous records, including five 5,000-yard seasons (first in 2008 with 5,069 yards). His pinnacle came in 2009, winning Super Bowl XLIV MVP honors with 288 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
Brees earned two Offensive Player of the Year awards (2008, 2011) and led the league in passing yards seven times, touchdowns six times and completion percentage six times.

Brees retired after the 2020 season with career totals of 80,358 passing yards, 571 touchdowns and 243 interceptions across 287 games, boasting a 67.7 percent completion rate and 98.7 passer rating. A 13-time Pro Bowler and 2004 Comeback Player of the Year, he ranks second all-time in yards and touchdowns.
Brees’ standout attributes were his unparalleled accuracy, quick processing, and pocket awareness. Despite being only six feet tall, he compensated with elite footwork and anticipation. He thrived in spread offense that empowered his timing and efficiency.
Brees’ exploits on the field and general leadership revitalized post-Katrina New Orleans, earning him the 2010 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year.
