The New England Patriots are moving on from Jabrill Peppers.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday that the Patriots released the veteran safety, ending a three-year stint.

The decision follows weeks of chatter that Peppers was not an ideal fit in head coach Mike Vrabel’s system with new defensive coordinator Terrell Williams.

Peppers, 29, had three years left on his deal, including more than $4 million guaranteed for 2025. A former Cleveland Browns first-round pick, Peppers has logged 99 career appearances with 85 starts, seven interceptions and 5.5 sacks.

Despite that track record, Peppers played deep into the preseason schedule, a sign his roster spot was uncertain.

In 2024, Peppers was arrested on multiple charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He was acquitted of the domestic violence allegations but spent seven games on the commissioner’s exempt list before returning. He also lost his captain designation during that stretch.

By the time Patriots camp wrapped up this summer, Peppers and fellow veteran Kyle Dugger had both fallen behind younger options. Rookie Craig Woodson and free-agent addition Jaylinn Hawkins received extended looks, and both are now positioned for significant roles.

For Peppers, his résumé suggests he should soon have another opportunity elsewhere.
