The Boston Red Sox are reportedly closing in on a deal with former Washington Nationals first baseman Nathaniel Lowe after he was designated for assignment last week. And according to one team insider, his debut with his new squad could come sooner than expected.

With Triston Casas suffering a season-ending injury back in May, the Red Sox have been piecing things together at first base for the majority of the year. Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro have largely held down the fort, but with Toro struggling, the front office has reportedly been exploring external options as of late.

That led them to Lowe, a former Silver Slugger who is enduring a rough season with the Nationals. As their primary first baseman, Lowe is hitting just .216 with 16 home runs and 68 RBIs this season. However, given the Sox’s need for help at first base, he should immediately earn a consistent role on this team.

As it turns out, that may be exactly what happens. While the deal still has to be officially announced, Chris Cotillo of MassLive shared that Lowe could be in Boston’s lineup on Monday night when they open their three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

“It’s possible the Red Sox have Lowe in the lineup as soon as tomorrow,” Cotillo shared in a post on X shortly after the news of the deal was reported.

Lowe earned a Silver Slugger in 2022 with the Texas Rangers when he hit .302 with 27 home runs and 76 RBIs. He is also a strong defender at first base, having won a Gold Glove in 2023. More importantly, though, he helped the Rangers win the World Series that year, meaning his addition would give the Red Sox some more postseason experience.

The hope is that joining a playoff contender could provide Lowe with a spark, as he’s largely labored through the 2025 season with the dismal Nationals. How the first base rotation will shake out remains to be seen, but Lowe could quickly become Boston’s top option at this spot.

It will be worth keeping tabs on the official announcement for Lowe’s signing, as the corresponding roster moves could be important. Once it becomes official, look for Lowe to make his Red Sox debut on Monday night against the O’s.
