Boston Red Sox reliever Greg Weissert was the pitcher of record in Sunday’s 5-3 loss to the Miami Marlins. The righty entered the game in the top of the ninth inning and allowed a lead-off, game-tying home run to Dane Myers.

Weissert exited the game after recording an out and surrendering another base hit. Steven Matz took over and also allowed a home run, giving the Marlins a lead that ultimately was enough to win.

After the game, Weissert took the blame for the loss.

“It sucks. Hanging a slider like that, you can’t really expect good results,” Weissert said. “I just didn’t get it done, unfortunately, tonight. … It sucks to be the person that’s responsible for it.”

Weissert had pitched the ninth inning three times this season going into Sunday. He hadn’t allowed a run and has recorded three saves. While he couldn’t get the job done on Sunday, he wasn’t the only one responsible.

On Saturday, Isaiah Campbell allowed three runs with a five-run lead, forcing Aroldis Chapman into the game. It was Chapman’s second appearance in as many days, which rendered him unavailable for Sunday.

It’s impossible to know if Chapman would have converted the save. Still, he almost certainly would have entered the game instead of Weissert in the ninth inning, and he’s been fantastic all season.

The Red Sox still hold the second American League Wild Card spot, though the New York Yankees picked up a game and are only a half-game behind.
