This season has been all about the youth movement for the Boston Red Sox, and that theme is continuing against the New York Yankees this weekend.

Less than 24 hours after Red Sox rookie Roman Anthony smashed a clutch two-run homer to help win Thursday’s game against the Yankees, top prospect Jhostynxon Garcia will make his Major League debut for Boston on Friday night.

The Red Sox’s No. 3 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Garcia will man center field and bat fifth in his MLB debut at Yankee Stadium.

The 22-year-old outfielder is the latest Boston star rookie to debut against New York — a trend that dates all the way back to Ted Williams in 1939. Recent Red Sox rookies to play their first MLB game against the Yankees include Mookie Betts (2014), Jarren Duran (2021), Ceddanne Rafaela (2024) and Marcelo Mayer (2025).

Granted, Boston faces New York more frequently than other teams by virtue of playing in the same division, so rookies are more likely to debut against the Yankees than clubs from other divisions. Games against New York also tend to be important and carry playoff implications, so it makes sense that the Red Sox would try to get a boost by calling up their best prospects.

Still, it’s telling that Boston trusts Garcia enough to throw him into a high-stakes late-season game at Yankee Stadium. It’s one thing to come up and face the Kansas City Royals in May, but a player truly has to be ready to be thrust into a playoff race.

Garcia destroyed Triple-A pitching prior to his promotion, batting .303/.367/.564 with 17 homers, 56 RBI and 52 runs in 66 games with Worcester. He seems ready for The Show.

He’ll start against one of the best pitchers in baseball in Max Fried, a three-time All-Star who’s 13-5 with a 3.26 ERA in 25 starts this year. As a right-handed batter, at least Garcia has the platoon advantage against him.

Many Red Sox rookies who debuted against the Yankees went on to become stars, so hopefully Garcia can follow in their footsteps.
