Red Sox Veteran Emerging As Comeback Player Of the Year Lock

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story keeps rewriting the script on his comeback season.

Story on Saturday delivered the kind of performance that has him pushing into the American League Comeback Player of the Year conversation.

His two-run double in the third cracked open the game, and two innings later he crushed his 20th home run of the year, an opposite-field drive off Will Warren. By day’s end he was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored in a 12-1 rout of the Yankees.

The breakout effort added more shine to what already has become a defining year for Story.

He has rebounded with both power and speed after appearing in only 26 games in 2024 due to a dislocated shoulder.

His 20 homers and 22 stolen bases without getting caught stealing mark his sixth career 20/20 season — and at age 32, he became the oldest player in Red Sox history to reach the milestone. His 79 RBIs also lead the team.

Boston’s offense supported Story with contributions up and down the lineup. Ceddanne Rafaela doubled and drove in a run, David Hamilton piled up three hits including a triple and Carlos Narváez added three more knocks with a two-run shot in the ninth. By the fourth inning every starter had reached base.

The Red Sox put the game completely out of reach with a seven-run ninth that included an Anthony Volpe throwing error, a Paul Blackburn balk and Narváez’s homer. Boos from the sellout crowd punctuated the inning as Boston cruised to its third straight win in the series.

For Story, this season has been about proving durability and reestablishing impact.

Saturday was another step forward, and his case for comeback honors is only getting stronger.
