Boston Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer will soon receive an anti-inflammation injection in his wrist, manager Alex Cora announced prior to Saturday’s matchup with the Houston Astros.

Cora provided context relating to that method of treatment, which essentially is an attempt to get him back on the field as quickly as possible.

“He really wants to get back and this is the route,” Cora said, as transcribed by Christopher Smith of MassLive. “We’ll see how he reacts to it, then we’ll go from there… We have to wait three days to see if it works, and then he starts doing baseball activities and see how he reacts to it.”

Mayer, who is slashing .228/.272/.402 since being promoted on May 24, was placed on the injured list on July 25 after he left the previous game with wrist discomfort. Boston has since been seeking out the right treatment method for the injury, and it this is the one all parties settled on.

It’ll remain to be seen whether it works, but if it does, Boston could have its preferred lineups in place entering the stretch run in September.
