The Boston Red Sox have discovered a rising star whose game has drawn one of the most flattering comparisons in team history.

Roman Anthony’s debut season has been so composed that many fans are reminded of Fred Lynn’s remarkable breakthrough nearly 50 years ago.

Lynn himself sees the resemblance. The 1975 American League MVP says Anthony’s poise and swing spark memories of his rookie season, he told Chad Finn of the Boston Globe.

The similarities stand out. Both are left-handed hitters who make tough at-bats look effortless, and both wear No. 19 after Lynn encouraged Anthony’s switch early in his career.

More striking is how quickly Anthony’s performance has lifted Boston’s lineup. Since his June call-up, the 21-year-old has batted over .300 with power to all fields and an advanced ability to reach base. His arrival aligned with the club’s midseason surge back into the playoff mix.

Lynn admires the subtler aspects of Anthony’s approach. He praised the rookie for drawing walks against pitchers he had never faced, and he pointed to highlights showing Anthony driving balls toward the Green Monster. Lynn said understanding Fenway Park’s quirks at such a young age is rare.

Lynn said he plans to be in Boston this week to see Anthony up close.
