A little luck went a long way for the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Wilyer Abreu put Boston ahead with a bizarre two-run home run. Dane Myers appeared to make a jumping catch, but the ball fell out of his glove and over the short right-field fence at Fenway Park.
Myers fell in disbelief as a highlight catch turned into a miscue that gave Abreu his 22nd home run of the season. It also afforded the Red Sox a lead with Garrett Crochet on the mound.
Here’s a look at the play, courtesy of NESN on X:
Abreu will take the favorable bounce amid a power outage. The 26-year-old had homered once in his last 21 games since touching them all twice on July 20.

He’s still held his own at the plate, registering a .346 on-base percentage in August before Sunday’s game. Yet Abreu began the game with a .476 slugging percentage, his lowest rate since June 29.
Meanwhile, Myers made just his 13th start of the season in right field on Sunday. The Marlins have reconfigured their outfield after losing All-Star Kyle Stowers to an injury over the weekend.

That play still represents the difference in Sunday’s game, as the Red Sox remain up 2-1 through six innings. The Red Sox would improve to 69-56 if they complete the sweep at home.
