The 2004 Boston Red Sox are getting yet another documentary, this one courtesy of ESPN.
On Sunday, ESPN released the trailer for its upcoming three-part docuseries “Believers: Boston Red Sox,” which will be available to stream on Sept. 26 via the ESPN App. The series will cover the franchise’s painful 86-year championship drought and the iconic 2004 team that finally ended it.
The minute-long trailer features dramatic music, clips from the team’s tortured history and interviews with numerous Boston celebrities, including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Donnie Wahlberg, Bill Burr and more. David Ortiz is the only former player to appear in the trailer, although Johnny Damon, Curt Schilling, Kevin Millar and others were reportedly involved as well.
Affleck executive-produced the series, which is directed by Gotham Chopra and Lauren Fisher. Chopra directed the 2018 Tom Brady docuseries “Tom vs. Time,” while Fisher is a two-time Emmy award-winning director.

“Believers” is the latest in a long line of documentaries about the famed 2004 Red Sox, from NESN’s “Faith Rewarded” (2004) and ESPN’s “Four Days in October” (2010) to Netflix’s “The Comeback” (2024).
This new series might be the most star-studded one yet, but time will tell if it has anything new to say. Boston’s epic 2004 season is well-covered ground at this point, making it difficult to bring anything new to the table that fans don’t already know.
It’s disappointing that Affleck & Co. chose to rehash the 2004 Red Sox rather than exploring one of the organization’s other recent and less-covered titles. The 2013 team is especially deserving of a documentary given its impact on the city following the tragic Boston Marathon bombings.

While ESPN’s new series looks promising, hopefully the next major Red Sox documentary focuses on something else.
