So you’re saying there’s a chance? If the rumor mill is right and the Boston Red Sox are set to chase impending free agent Kyle Schwarber after the 2025 World Series, then the news USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Sunday is quite compelling.

“The Phillies did try to sign DH Kyle Schwarber before the start of the season, but the two sides never came close to reaching an agreement,” Nightengale wrote.

That news makes it quite clear Schwarber is ready to hit the open market and see what offers teams will put on the table. The 32-year-old was smart to bank on himself because he’s having a walk season for the ages.

The three-time All-Star is tied for the National League lead with 53 home runs and he leads the majors with 129 RBIs. Both are career highs and both make him a legitimate NL MVP candidate for the Philadelphia Phillies, who have already clinched the NL East division title.

Nightengale reported last week Schwarber “should command a four-year deal in excess of $120 million.”

In terms of numbers, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand is in the same ballpark as Nightengale.

“Among those we spoke to, the consensus is that Schwarber should land a deal of four or five years for at least $30 million per season,” Feinsand reported.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel polled 20 scouts, executives and agents to get a sense of Schwarber’s value in free agency.

“The average of all 20 projections is 4.3 years, $131.8 million, for a $30.7 million average annual value (AAV),” McDaniel reported. “The median projection of those deals is $119 million.”

Schwarber spent part of the 2021 season in Boston as a midseason acquisition and helped the Red Sox reach the American League Championship Series.

An 11-year-veteran and three-time All-Star, Schwarber helped the Chicago Cubs win the 2016 World Series.
