As of this writing, we still don’t know the full details of Roman Anthony’s oblique injury, including the potential return timeline. But we now know who’ll replace the star outfielder in the likely event he’s forced to miss time.
“As the Red Sox await Roman Anthony’s MRI results, Nick Sogard is the likely choice to replace him on the roster, per multiple sources,” MassLive’s Chris Cotillo wrote Wednesday in an X post.
Anthony suffered an oblique injury while striking out during Tuesday’s 11-7 win over the Cleveland Guardians at Fenway Park. Red Sox manager Alex Cora described Anthony as “sore” during postgame media availability, while Anthony said the pain was worse than what he experienced earlier in the season while nursing a back injury.
Perhaps Anthony’s injury turns out to be minor and only forces him to miss a couple of weeks. Regardless, his absence will arrive at the worst possible time, as the Red Sox are pushing for an American League playoff spot.
As for Sogard, he’s posted a .242 average and .641 OPS in 18 games (69 plate appearances) across multiple big-league stints this season. The 27-year-old is able to play all four infield positions.
