When the Boston Red Sox signed Trevor Story to a lucrative contract before the 2022 season, they thought they were getting a complete player. During his time with the Colorado Rockies, Story showed power, defense, speed and athleticism.
Over the first three years of his Red Sox tenure, Story didn’t have many opportunities to show off his tools. Injuries shortened his seasons, resulting in him playing just 163 games over three seasons. He hit 21 home runs and stole 29 bases over those three seasons.
This season, he’s healthy and has produced more than his first three seasons combined. In 147 games, he’s hit 24 home runs and stolen 30 bases. Against the Athletics on Tuesday, he stole bases 29 and 30. He’s yet to be caught this year, tying a major league record for most stolen bases in a season without being caught.
According to Rob Bradford, Trea Turner, Vince Coleman and former Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford are the three other players to ever accomplish that feat. If Story can steal one more base without being caught, he’ll stand alone atop that leaderboard.
“It’s cool,” Story said. “It will be cool to look at after the season, for sure, kinda relish in that. Right now, like we talked about, it’s all about winning.”

The streak hasn’t been without scares. Story was nearly picked off against the Arizona Diamondbacks in early September, but somehow avoided the tag for his 26th stolen base of the season. On Tuesday, the Athletics challenged his second theft of the night, but the safe call was ultimately confirmed.
The Red Sox will try to get back on track following a 2-1 loss to the A’s on Wednesday. Shea Langeliers is an excellent thrower behind the plate, while starting pitcher Mason Barnett is quick to the plate. Story has chosen his opportunities to run wisely. Wednesday’s game might be a difficult one for him to break the record, should he reach base.
