Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider said star shortstop Bo Bichette’s availability for the American League Divisional Series is up in the air.
Bichette hasn’t played since Sept. 6 when he suffered a knee injury sliding into home against the New York Yankees. Although the two-time Major League Baseball All-Star has begun working out, Schneider said his status is up in the air.
“Day-to-day still,” Schneider said to the media on Friday. “Trying to do more every single day. Coming right down to the wire. We’ll see how today goes, and make that decision tomorrow.”
Schneider said Bichette will try to run the bases and hit on Friday, before the ALDS series against the Yankees begins on Saturday.
However, the Blue Jays manager made it clear that Bichette would need to play regularly to be on the ALDS roster, and not just be available for a pinch-hit situation every once in a while.

“I would say, for him to be on (ALDS roster), he’d have to play pretty regularly,” Schneider added. “Just that way we deploy our guys, we don’t want to deviate too much from what we’ve been doing. So it’s not saving him for a Kirk Gibson at-bat once a game that may not come. He’d have to be pretty regular in some capacity.”
Bichette was slashing .311/.357/.483 through 139 games, while also leading the MLB in hits and doubles, prior to his injury.
The Blue Jays host the Yankees in Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday at 4:08 p.m. ET.
