The Boston Red Sox bowed out early in the 2025 MLB Playoffs, losing their three-game wild-card series against the New York Yankees. There’s no doubt that the season was a success, though, and now, all eyes are on Craig Breslow and the front office to see what moves they make over the offseason in an effort to improve the team.

After spending a few years treading water, the Sox took a step forward last season, thanks to some aggressive offseason moves and a slew of prospects storming their way to the majors. As a result, Boston appears to be in great shape heading into free agency.

What the front office does next will likely determine just how high the Red Sox’s expectations are next season. And if you ask Breslow, he doesn’t sound content with just making it to the playoffs; he wants to help his team take the next step forward in 2026.

“We’re definitely closer (to our goal) when you think about the season we just had,” Breslow said, via Sean McAdam of MassLive. “But we’re also not where we want to go yet and adding the wins that take you from 89 to 90 to 91 to 92 are really hard. On the field, we saw some of our key players take a step forward in terms of development and performance.

“We also have needs that we’ll likely address via external acquisitions. From a (front) office standpoint, we’ve some really difficult but necessary decisions to get our operation focused on what matters, which is winning major league baseball games … This isn’t the time to pat ourselves on the back. We have work to do.”

There’s no doubt that Breslow is saying the right things, and while several of the moves he made last offseason panned out, all eyes are going to be on him over the next couple of months. Boston is in position to build off of its 2025 campaign, and if Breslow pushes the right buttons, the team could enter next year as a legitimate World Series contender.
