It’s no secret Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow needs to add some thump to the lineup for next season.
Even if third baseman Alex Bregman remains in Boston, the Red Sox will be shopping for some thunder.
According to a pair of MLB insiders, Boston could end up chasing the biggest bats on the free-agent market.
“Particularly after the June 15 trade of Rafael Devers, Boston’s lack of power became an issue,” MLB.com’s Ian Browne noted.
“Two pending free agents, in particular, could fix that issue in Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber,” Browne added.

That syncs up with what MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported.
“The consensus around the league is that a Bregman-Boston reunion remains the most likely scenario, though should the two part ways, that could open up the possibility of the Sox making a push for a free-agent power bat such as Pete Alonso or Kyle Schwarber,” Feinsand wrote.
“While scoring runs … this is kind of a zero-sum game, and it doesn’t really matter how you score — but in the postseason, a lot of runs come via the home run because the pitching is so dominant. So I think that’s a consideration,” Breslow said at his end-of-season press conference, according to Browne.

Schwarber is coming off a career year, setting personal records with an NL-best 56 home runs and MLB-leading 132 RBIs.
The three-time All-Star is projected to get a four-year deal worth as much as $30 million per season.
The 32-year-old Schwarber spent part of the 2021 season in Boston as a midseason acquisition and helped the Red Sox reach the American League Championship Series.

As for Alonso, the two-time Home Run Derby champion said after the regular season ended he will opt out of his contract and hit the open market.
A five-time All-Star, Alonso was a free agent last winter and didn’t find a multi-year, nine-figure contract to his liking so he returned to the Mets, who gave him a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt-out clause.
This year, Alonso became the Mets’ all-time home run leader, surpassing eight-time All-Star Darryl Strawberry.

The 30-year-old Alonso hit 38 home runs this season, which was eighth-best in the majors, and drove in 126 runs, second only to Schwarber.
