The Boston Red Sox have been connected to pending free agent first baseman Pete Alonso multiple times already in the young offseason.

With an obvious need for an additional power bat in 2026, the five-time All-Star would be a good fit for the Red Sox as they try to build off their 2025 playoff berth.

Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston discussed the pending free agencies of both Alonso and Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber on Friday and predicted that the former could end up in Boston next season.

“Both players have expressed their desire to remain with their current teams, but recent criticisms of Alonso’s defensive throwing and scouts suggesting he needs to move to the DH position and give up first base may be a deal-breaker for the former Florida Gator,” Beaston wrote. “If so, the two-time Home Run Derby champion feels like the most likely of the two to depart and continue his career elsewhere. Like Boston.”

The MLB writer predicted that Alonso will leave the New York Mets over the winter and join either the Red Sox or San Francisco Giants.

The “Polar Bear” finished the 2025 campaign with 38 home runs, 126 RBIs and a career-high .272 batting average.

For comparison, Boston’s biggest power bat this past season was Trevor Story, who ended the year with 25 home runs and 96 RBIs.

Alonso has been one of the most consistent run producers in baseball this decade, posting over 100 RBIs four times since debuting in 2019. The Red Sox, meanwhile, haven’t had a player finish a season with more than 100 runs driven in since Rafael Devers recorded 113 RBIs in 2021.
