Drake Maye unknowingly showed up a former New England Patriots player on Sunday.
Jason McCourty called New England’s Week 7 win over the Tennessee Titans for CBS. With approximately one minute left in the second quarter, the ex-Patriots defensive back predicted that the Patriots offense would take a conservative approach. The Super Bowl champion had some inside knowledge since he played with New England during Josh McDaniels’ second stint.
“The Patriots aren’t going to go too fast,” McCourty said. “Josh McDaniels, the offensive coordinator, he has a last shot mentality. He wants to make sure they end this half with the ball.”
New England snapped the ball right as McCourty completed that thought. Maye instantly defied the commentator’s analysis, tossing a 39-yard touchdown pass to Kayshon Boutte.
McCourty playfully responded to an Awful Announcing clip of the moment on social media.

“Next time I have NE I’ll be sure to tell Josh and Drake I hate them for this lol,” McCourty wrote.
Contrary to McCourty’s belief, the Patriots gave the Titans the ball back with 49 seconds remaining. Tennessee made nothing of the extra time, going seven yards on four plays to end the opening half.

Maye continued to move the chains methodically, setting a franchise record by completing 21 of 23 passes on Sunday. Yet the 23-year-old has also flourished downfield, averaging 8.6 yards per pass attempt this season.
Unfortunately for McCourty, Maye wasn’t a “Checkdown Charlie” to close the first half. McCourty watched one former team dispatch the other when New England gained 387 total yards at Tennessee.
The Fox broadcast may want to take notes before calling New England’s Week 8 game against the Cleveland Browns.
