The New York Giants decided to move on from head coach Brian Daboll on Monday following a disappointing 2-8 start to the season. In light of this change, several former New England Patriots coaches could be potential candidates for the job.

The first name that comes to mind is Bill Belichick, given his connection to the Giants, since he served as an assistant coach under Bill Parcells in the 1980s.

However, another Patriots assistant could also be a suitable candidate for the job. NJ.com’s Darryl Slater named possible candidates for the Giants’ head coaching job and thinks Bill O’Brien could be a fit.

“O’Brien, on the other hand, is an intriguing option, if he wants to leave Boston College, where he has struggled mightily this season,” Slater wrote on Monday.

O’Brien is currently the head coach at Boston College, but with a 1-9 record, he may be on the lookout for a new job next season. He spent two different stints in New England, holding various roles. His first tenure lasted from 2007 to 2011, during which he served as the receivers coach, quarterback coach and offensive coordinator. He returned in 2023, assuming the roles of offensive coordinator and quarterback coach once again.

The 56-year-old coach has prior experience as an NFL head coach, leading the Houston Texans from 2014 to 2020, where he finished with a record of 52-48.

The Giants would be an intriguing opportunity for O’Brien, as he could bring veteran experience to a young team in need of seasoned leadership.
